Please pray for the family of Jerry Koenig

Jerald Wayne Koenig

Dear friends and family of Jerry,

On Thursday, December 7th, Jerald Wayne Koenig breathed his last and finished his earthly journey. Jerry knew the day was coming for quite some time and was well-prepared. He shared many last “I love yous” and “goodbyes”. He died quietly.

I am comforted to know that Jesus won a great victory for Jerry. Death is defeated, evil is undone, and the world belongs to God and his children. God is giving Jerry and all who trust in him the gift of life. I pray that you have the same comfort and look to your own eternal rest:

“Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude… shouting, ‘Hallelujah! For our God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bridegroom has made himself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given him to wear.'” (Revelation 19)

We were blessed by Jerry’s love for kids and his desire to teach them the faith. Whether it was the soccer camp, vacation Bible school, or many different classes for children, Jerry lived God’s command from long ago: “Teach these things to your children and your children’s children.”

Obituary: Jerry’s obituary will be posted later

Funeral: Jerry will receive a Christian funeral on Wednesday, December 20th at Peace Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m.

The service is open to the public.

The service will be available via livestream for those who are unable to attend in person. Please see our site https://peaceotsego.org/worship or visit our YouTube page Peace Lutheran Church - YouTube. The service will be available a little bit before 11:00 a.m. and be archived afterwards.

Visitation: Visitation will take place on Wednesday the 20th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church.

Internment: Jerry will be interred after the luncheon in Alamo Cemetery.

Light meal: Everyone is welcome to enjoy a light meal immediately following the service at Peace.

Memorials: To give a memorial to Peace in honor of Jerry, please go to https://peaceotsego.org/give and select “Memorial” or attend the funeral.

I invite you to gather with all of us to mourn and celebrate the victory Jesus gave to Jerry. May Jesus give us eternal peace.

Please pray for Jerry’s family:

Lord Jesus, by your victory over death you have opened the way to eternal life for all of us. Comfort Jerry’s family in their loss. Let their grief empty their souls of pain, hurt, and disappointment. Fill them up with new life. Renew their joy each morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Good news for Peace December 2

Hello friends of Peace,

We’ve started Advent, the time Christians call the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Advent is a great time to prayerfully reflect on the coming of Jesus. We consider three comings at the same time:

  • His birth as a child to save us some 2,000 years ago

  • His coming to us now in Word and Sacrament to live in us and among us

  • His future return to restore all things

There are many good resources for your Advent meditation, both personal and family. I’ve included some of them and if you’d like more, please reach out to me. There are different ways to obtain each.

Advent means “coming”; it also means "expectation". It helps us develop a joyful expectation of Christ’s return. This Advent as you meditate on God’s Word, may he match the expectations of your heart to his own so that his return is nothing but the greatest bliss, joy, pleasure, and satisfaction for you.

This Advent as you meditate on God’s Word, may he match the expectations of your heart to his own so that his return is nothing but the greatest bliss, joy, pleasure, and satisfaction for you.

If you don’t have an Advent wreath, get one this year. Church will be glad to help you get a beautiful, simple Advent wreath for only $15. Email church@peaceotsego.org or call 269-694-6104

Christmas 2023

It wouldn’t be too hard to make you happy - ice cream, a good drink, a night with people you love, and a bonus at work - that would cover it. Unless tragedy has struck your family, you’re in pain, and you can’t shake the sense that the world has changed. No amount of ice cream can fix that. That requires a fundamental reorientation of life. That requires good news.

Find great joy because of truly good news with us this Christmas.

Hometown Christmas

Otsego’s “Hometown Christmas” event will take place December 2nd.

We have 2 chances to participate: hot cocoa, parade security team.

Come on down and say hi!

Thanksgiving

We had a wonderful celebration thanking God for all his goodness, especially the spiritual work he has been up to. Here are a few things we’re especially thankful for:

  • Ron’s baptism

  • Clara’s profession

  • Ellise’s profession

  • Relatives of Tom & Nancy, as well as Mary getting baptized!

  • Tom’s “I love you”

  • helping Elizabeth read and hear the gospel for one of the first times

The apostle Paul reminds us to give thanks in all circumstances. Friends, let us remember that Jesus has even redeemed us from suffering, so that we can even give thanks when we suffer. Christians of all people should be thankful.

Keep sharing your reasons for thanks so we can be thankful with you!

The Things of Christmas!

Children up to 5th grade should sit in the first 3 rows.

Welcome and Gathering

After the absolution and prayer, the children should come stand on the lower step.

Manger: Luke 2:1-7

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Angels: Luke 2:8-15

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,

and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Luke 2:16-20

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Lessons

Isaiah 11:1-3 (Kloey Hayes)

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord— 3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

Revelation 22:12-17

12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. 14 “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. 15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” 17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.

Exodus 28:31-35

31 “Make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth, 32 with an opening for the head in its center. There shall be a woven edge like a collar around this opening, so that it will not tear. 33 Make pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn around the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them. 34 The gold bells and the pomegranates are to alternate around the hem of the robe. 35 Aaron must wear it when he ministers. The sound of the bells will be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the Lord and when he comes out, so that he will not die.

Romans 5:12, 15-17

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

Please pray for the family of Ray Winkel

Ray Winkel

Dear friends and family of Ray

Dear friends and family of Ray,

On Thursday, November 9th, Ray finished his journey with us and was brought to his eternal rest in Jesus. Ray wanted to cross the finish line. I was privileged to read him some of his last words: “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” Even though he was troubled a little at the end by sickness, he never wavered in God’s love for him. He was not shaken.

I am comforted to know that Jesus won a great victory for Ray. Death is defeated, evil is undone, and the world belongs to God and his children. God is giving Ray and all who trust in him the gift of life.

I don’t know of a person who wasn’t blessed by Ray when they spent time with him. I spoke with one of his caretakers the other night, who had only been with Ray for a few years. Even though they weren’t his best years, they meant a great deal to this young man. Ray similarly impacted me and many others. God used him to be a blessing.

Ray has been an integral part of Peace for many years. He was part of the committee that planned the first parsonage, he helped design the first bulletins, and he was on the board to start the day school. He celebrated the cancelation of the first mortgage.

Good news for Peace November 2

Hello friends of Peace,

Daylight Savings Time into Sunday - turn your clocks back!

It’s hard to imagine how much the Reformation changed life in Germany and Europe. Sleepy Christians came to life, bored Christians woke up, and unrepentant and frustrated individuals looked for healing and change.

That Spirit died out after a while, but in 1675 it started ago. A man named Nikolaus von Zinzendorf visited Frankfurt. He was a leader in the move and times that were coming called Pietism. There might have been a number of concerns about Pietism, but it definitely did much to change lives. Zinzendorf wrote to his friends, “Never have I experienced revival like I have seen it in Frankfurt.”

What a wonderful thing to be part of! When God comes by his Word, people confess sins and live in Jesus.

Advent means God comes to us. May he come mightily to you and me this year.

2024 Ministry

We recently worked out our plan and budget for 2024 ministry.

  • We’re excited to keep serving the people of Otsego - Plainwell with the eternal gospel

  • We’re not planning any significant staffing, activity, or facility expenses. Attendance has increased by 10% in the last year and want to keep going that way.

  • We’re planning to spend about $5,000 more than we make next year.

I’ve been grateful lately to look someone in the eye and say, “God loves you.” Friends, that’s what we get to do. To spread truly good news.

Please pray for the family of Dolores Cook

Dolores Cook

Dear friends and family of Dolores,

On Monday, October 23rd, Dolores finished her journey with us and was brought to her eternal rest in Jesus. Dolores couldn’t wait for life with her Lord. She loved reading Scripture, praying, and studying God’s teaching. She passed on that faith to her children, grandchildren, and all the people of God at Peace. I will miss her prayers and inspiration.

I am comforted to know that Jesus won a great victory for Dolores. Death is defeated, evil is undone, and the world belongs to God and his children. God is giving Dolores and all who trust in him the gift of life.

Good news for Peace October 18

Hello friends of Peace,

The apostle Paul wrote, “15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. 16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.” (Galatians 6:16). He did not down play or eliminate the people of God. But he also did not connect anyone’s placement in God’s Israel with circumcision. He connected it with being a “new creation”. His principle was, “God’s Israel is the people who are a new creation from God.”

That still holds true today. The Israel of God are the people who have been made a new creation by God. That includes Israelites or Jewish people who have been made new in Christ. That includes Palestinians who have been made new in Christ. And yes, that includes Americans made new in Christ.

The conflict in Israel, Palestine, and the Middle East in general has caused terrible damage. If you have concerns, questions, or frustrations, please feel free to talk to pastor. He is glad to support and encourage you.

Peace and mercy are yours, people of God.

Congregational Business Meetings

Our October meetings to conduct congregation business are coming up. These business meetings are a great chance for us to publicly praise, thank, honor, and glorify God for the work he has done this past year, and to ask him to do more than we could ask for in 2024.

  • October 15th 10:45 Congregational Forum -

  • October 22nd 10:44 Voters’ Meeting

Pastor will present the 2024 ministry plan and budget. Highlights include:

  1. We’ll approve the ministry plan and budget with an income of about $155K and expenses about $160K. There are no major changes planned for our staffing, facility, or programming for 2024. We are absorbing rising costs related to staffing and utilities.

  2. The council wants ratification of a special hail damage expense of about $8K.

  3. We'd like the congregation to accept the purchase of a second stove by the Ladies Guild and to pay for the necessary electrical from memorial funds.

  4. Review Bible removal

  5. Review furniture

  6. Introduce a new room arrangement

Please pray for the family of Larry Nitz

Larry Arthur Nitz

Dear friends and family of Larry,

On Monday, October 16th, Larry finished his journey with us and was brought to his eternal rest in Jesus. Larry was a godly, faithful man. He lived his whole life as a baptized Christian, dieing to sin and living in Christ. He made his faith evident at Peace and other congregations with a clear, simple confession of Christ.

I am comforted to know that Jesus won the victory for Larry. Death is defeated, evil is undone, and the world belongs to God and his children. God has given Larry and all who trust in him the gift of life.

I praise God for Larry’s steadfastness.

I am glad to honor God for his faith.

Obituary: To read Larry’s obituary, please visit https://www.winkelfuneralhome.com/larry-a-nitz/

Funeral: Larry will receive a Christian funeral service on Saturday October 21st at Peace Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m.

Visitation: Visitation will take place on October 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church.

Internment: Larry will be interred immediately following the service at West Cooper Cemetery. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Light meal: Everyone is welcome to enjoy a light meal after the service and internment at Peace.

Memorials: To give a memorial to Peace in honor of Larry, please go to https://peaceotsego.org/give and select “Memorial” or attend the funeral.

I invite you to gather with all of us to mourn and celebrate the victory Jesus gave to Larry. May Jesus give us eternal peace.

Serving the living Savior

Pastor Nathaniel Timmermann

Please pray for Larry’s family:

Lord Jesus, by your victory over death you have opened the way to eternal life for all of us. Comfort Larry’s family in their loss. Let their grief empty their souls of pain, hurt, and disappointment. Fill them up with new life. Renew their joy each morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Kids Ministry and Space

Kids class space

Check out our fresh space for kids!

For the fall, we have decided to try giving the kids better class space. We’ve moved them into the rooms off the family center. We’ve got a lot that we’d like to do to those rooms, if we can keep them there.

Some benefits include

  • Right sized - it’s a better size space for the number of people, so it is easier to hear, talk, see etc

  • Improved safety - it’s further from the front door with more limited access as well as easy exit; it also has fewer items that could be problems

  • Dedicated space - it’s a space just for our kids; it can stay clean just for them.

We’re trying this for the fall; come check it out and let us know what you think!

Good news for Peace September 23

Hello friends of Peace,

Why me?

He listed one act of grace after another. I won’t even tell them. They’re his. Suffice it to say, I was struck by them. They seemed real.

Why me? That was his response.

The doctrine of election humbles us. Out of everything and everyone in the universe, God chose some. He chose his people.

Imagine what it feels like to be part of the row of animals at the shelter. A family walks in and walks down the row. They see a dog. He is happy, playful, delightful, and alive. The family jumps at him. But on the other side is a somber, sullen, and restrained pup. He lies there without moving. Mom says, “that’s the one”. Over the protests, the “but nos”, and the sighs, he slowly comes to life. “He’s the one.”

They choose for life. That’s what selection does. It gives life.

Friends, we don’t know why. He simply choose us.

So we learn to say, “I am his.”

See you Sunday, so that we, in this moment, can learn to say, “I am his.”

Service at 9:30, study at 8:00 and 10:45

CarePortal

Have you heard of CarePortal? CarePortal is an organization and tools to connect local congregations with community needs. It’s something we’ve been invited to participate in.

There are no obligations. We’re simply presented with needs and allowed to step in if we’d like. Here is a recent example:

“A single mother and her four children are experiencing homelessness. She is currently getting them back and forth to school and to doctor's appointments; however, her car tags expired and she already has received a ticket for not having updated tags. The cost of renewing her tags for one year, the time she needs to get out of homelessness. This will directly impact the children's ability to go to school and get to other places without it. If a donor is found, arrangements for direct payment to Secretary of State”

Check out the video if you’d like (https://youtu.be/pKopTMAN8M0?si=_XMIUjBfgEnbbjyB) and feel free to respond to this note if you’ve got questions.

Good news for Peace September 2

Hello friends of Peace,

Pastor recently returned a divine call to serve at St Paul's in North Mankato.

The reason was simple: the Lord gave him a conviction to do the work here.

In many ways, it was an excellent call - a large group of people committed to serving, wonderful music, a live for God's Word, a regular prayer group, and an openness to the work of the Holy Spirit.

I remain strongly interested in the work here.

  • I like our interest in financial health and want both the congregation and our individual families to get financially sound

  • I like the joint middle school high school work we do and see lots of chances to grow it. I hope 2 or 3 is you will join me and we make it better.

  • I like our interest in personal gospel bringing and want to train 25% of you to be excellent gospel bringers in your homes and lives

  • I want to pass off the tech work. It's time for people other than my family to do it.

  • I like our simplicity and want to help us downsize and simplify our ministry. We need to be more agile for the challenges to come.

  • I want to partner with our local churches to start the Hastings ministry

  • I like our progress in Kalamazoo and want to see that grow and develop

There is a lot of great ministry to be part of here in Otsego plainwell. I like being part of it with you and hope you'll join me!

But this call also makes another point.

The congregation in Mankato had gone four years without a pastor. This needs to stop. There are 300 souls that come to service each week without a pastor.

We have lots of small congregations in this area served by one pastor. Christians raise up the next group of people and pass their life on. Friends, that's what we need to do.

Let's get to it!

New member celebration

On Sunday, September 3rd, two young ladies, Clara and Ellise, will join the congregation as they make a public professions of faith. During the service, we will confirm their faith and pray for them. After the service, we’ll have a little celebration. Please come and celebrate with them!

Sundae Sunday

September 10th following the service the new Otsego - Plainwell Right to Life group would like the opportunity to meet you all. They are coming to serve us ice cream sundaes! See you for Sundae Sunday!

Welcome Home/Fall kick off

Hey! I’m getting excited for our fall event to Welcome friends and family Home and kick off our fall ministry! It’s a great time to be God’s people. Our world might be falling apart, but God is building a far better one with us. Let’s get to it!

  • installation service

  • cook out and lunch

  • family Olympics!

Sunday September 17th at 9:30 am! Look forward to seeing you!

Please pray for the family of Dave Myers

David Arthur William Myers

Dear friends and family of Dave

On Monday, August 28th David Arthur William Myers finished his journey with us and was brought to his eternal rest with Jesus. Christians everywhere have been represented well by Dave. He was baptized as a child and as a young adult consciously decided to live in that commitment. He made his faith evident at Peace and other congregations as an faithful father and husband, an elder, a Sunday School teacher, and loving Christian.

Now Dave has finished his race. I am comforted to know that Jesus won the race for him and so has assured him of the crown of life.

No matter what else Dave endured, he never turned away from the body of Christ. He missed it when he was not here. He eagerly desired the Lord’s Supper, confessed his sins, and sorrowed over the evil of life. His dear wife Jeanne faithfully cared and watched over him, and they worked mightily to love their friends and family.

We will miss his companionship.

Please pray for Dave’s family:

Lord Jesus, by your victory over death you have opened the way to eternal life for all of us. Comfort Dave’s family in their loss. Let their grief empty their souls of pain, hurt, and disappointment. Fill them up with new life. Renew their joy each morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
